CONCACAF Gold Cup Preview

Tuesday marks the beginning of the 13rd edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The tournament is to be hosted by the United States, but there will also be two matches played in Canada. This marks the first time the Gold Cup will be played in Canada. Matches will be played in big stadiums all across the United States, as the officials are expecting a large turnout. Excitement about soccer is at an all-time high in the United States as the men’s team had an exciting 2014 World Cup campaign. They are also coming off of friendly victories against both Germany and The Netherlands.

Mexico were favorites to win the tournament until last week when their star player, Javier Hernandez, broke his collarbone in a friendly with Honduras. Mexico’s chances at a title diminished, and the tournament was robbed of perhaps its most exciting star. With the Hernandez injury, many experts have picked the United States to build on their recent success and defend their Gold Cup crown on their home soil. Their recent friendly victories give reason to think they deserve to be the favorite. There is also some excitement surrounding Costa Rica, who made a miracle run to the quarter finals of the 2014 World Cup.

While the United States are a bit thin at fullback and forward, they are the favorites to win the crown, which results in automatic qualification for the Confederations Cup.
